England along with Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
